FibroScan Q & A

What is FibroScan?

FibroScan is an innovative type of ultrasound that assesses liver stiffness. It provides an alternative to an invasive liver biopsy for diagnosing issues like fatty liver disease and cirrhosis.

Fibroscan evaluates a 3cm3 cylinder of liver tissue using a small pulse of energy. Like a traditional ultrasound, the FibroScan probe sends the pulse into your body and collects the waves as they bounce back off your liver tissue. The speed of the echos indicates the stiffness and density of your liver tissue.

Why would I have a FibroScan?

The team at Digestive Disease Care uses FibroScan to assess your liver health. Some of the warning signs of liver problems include:

  • Jaundice (eyes and skin look yellow)
  • Swelling and pain in your abdomen
  • Dark urine
  • Pale or tar-colored stool
  • Bloody stool
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Itchy skin
  • Easily bruised skin

Healthy liver function is critical to your overall health and well-being. If you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment at Digestive Disease Care for diagnosis and treatment.

How should I prepare for FibroScan?

You need to have your FibroScan examination on an empty stomach. You should avoid eating for at least three hours before your appointment. You should also wear loose, comfortable clothing. Your provider will need to lift your shirt and expose the right side of your rib cage to get a clear and accurate reading.

You can drive yourself to and from your appointment as you don’t need anesthesia for this painless and noninvasive treatment. In many cases, the team at Digestive Disease Care provides FibroScan at the same time as your office visit with no additional cost.

What happens during FibroScan?

During your FibroScan examination, you recline on a treatment bed with your right arm raised above your head. Your provider lifts your shirt to expose the right side of your rib cage. They apply a water-based gel to your skin, which helps the pulse of energy travel through your body and into your liver.

Your provider places the FibroScan probe against your skin and releases the energy. You feel a tap on your skin as they take 10 measurements during the exam. The analyses indicate the stiffness of your liver, which provides information about its fat content and the presence of any scar tissue.

If you’re concerned about your liver health, call Digestive Disease Care or make an appointment online today for innovative diagnosis and treatment, including FibroScan.
